IEA to government: Subsidise transport fares to cushion Ghanaians

This forms part of a raft of measures suggested by the IEA to the government in the wake of the global economic crises

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has called on the government to subsidise transportation fares to lessen the plight of the masses.

This forms part of a raft of measures suggested by the IEA to the government in the wake of the global economic crises.

The Ghana Statistical Service last week increased the rate of inflation from 31.7% to 33.9%, the highest since August 2001.

A statement issued by the IEA on Monday (19 September) said: “Regarding fuel, we call for reduction of some of the fuel issues/levies and the use of part of government’s windfall gains from higher oil prices to cushion pump prices.”

“Regarding transport, we call for the expansion of public transport and subsidisation of fares to cushion the masses,” the IEA statement said.
