I’m disappointed at slow pace of Ghanaian film industry and theatre, says EastEnders star Rudolph Walker

Speaking at a party in Accra in honour of the American actor Sheryl Lee Ralph, the EastEnders star said the film industry and theatre in Ghana have failed to grow

The British actor Rudolph Malcom Walker CBE has expressed disappointment at the slow pace of Ghana’s film industry and theatre. Speaking at a brunch party hosted by EMY Africa in honour of the American actor Sheryl Lee Ralph, the EastEnders star said film and theatre in Ghana have failed to grow.

At the event with film stars and other creatives, Walker said, “As an honorary Ghanaian, I am disappointed that the film and the theatre industry have not progressed in leaps and bounds since the ’70s.

“You have the talent. Invest in it.”

His comment precedes the ace American film director Spike Lee’s interview with Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show in whih Lee said he was not aware Ghana had a film industry.

Lee said: “No one from Ghana’s film industry approached me while I was here [in Ghana].”

Walker believes that Ghanaian actors must be proactive if they want to see the film industry thrive.

He advised young actors and creatives to be passionate about their craft. “For the young people here, you must love what you are doing,” said Walker.

Ghanaian stars such as Martha Ankomah, Nikki Samonas, Mz Nancy, Nadia Buari, Ama K Abebrese, Sika Osei, Roselyn Ngissah, Salma Mumin, Harold Amenyah and Elikem Kumordzi all attended the brunch.
