- "Tomorrow is Sunday (16 May 2021), you are aware, where is the president going? The president is leaving the country, he is going away for nine days. Is he going to drink tea? No, His Excellency the president is stating in categorical terms that because of the impact of COVID-19 we need to put in place measures to turn the tide, so he is leaving the country for the next nine days, to woo investors... that is an attempt to fix the country.ā
Joseph Kpemka, the immediate past former deputy attorney general has stated that government is fixing challenges in the economy to alleviate plight of Ghanaians, contrary to claims that it has reneged on its duty.
A section of Ghanaians a few weeks ago took to social media to protest over what they describe as ābad governance and the high cost of living in the country.ā This follows an increase in fuel prices, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices as well as price for data and call.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s news analysis and current affairs programme, The Forum, Kpemka said Ghanaians are not fully feeling the impact of the various policy interventions by government because of the huge population.
“Go and check the number of factories put up by this government in four years. Just go and do your own independent checks, find out how many factories have been fully constructed and how many have been refurbished over the period of four years,” he said.
Kpemka added: “Go and do that comparison and you will come to the realisation that it is the size of the population which is making us not to feel the impact of some of those things, not that effort is not being made.”
Wooing investors
According to him, the government has carried out several initiatives to woo investors to boost the economy.
“Tomorrow is Sunday (16 May 2021), you are aware, where is the president going? The president is leaving the country, he is going away for nine days. Is he going to drink tea? No, His Excellency the president is stating in categorical terms that because of the impact of COVID-19 we need to put in place measures to turn the tide, so he is leaving the country for the next nine days, to woo investors… that is an attempt to fix the country.ā
He said the introduction of programmes such as the planting for food has greatly reduced the plight of rural folks compared to the past four years.
According to him, government’s biggest achievement such as the Free Senior High School and planting for food and jobs have brought a huge relief to Ghanaians.
