Mahama sweeps 98.9% of votes to become NDC flagbearer again

John Mahama's main challenger Kwabena Duffuor, a former governor of the central bank, pulled out of the race on Friday, citing instances of irregularities

The largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has chosen former president John Mahama as its candidate for presidential elections on 7 December 2024.

Mahama obtained a landslide victory in the poll by garnering 297,603 votes representing 98.9% of total valid votes cast, beating his only contender Kojo Bonsu, a former mayor of Kumasi, who also polled 3,181 votes representing 1.1%.

Total rejected ballots recorded were 4,353.

Bonsu conceded defeat hours before the declaration of the results.

“I have placed a call to H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him for the landslide victory,” Bonsu, the former mayor of Kumasi wrote on Facebook.

“Just as I’ve indicated throughout my campaign, regardless of the outcome of this election I’ll continue to serve the NDC party,” he added.

Mahama’s main contender Kwabena Duffuor, a former governor of the central bank, pulled out of the race on Friday, citing instances of irregularities.

“I wish to reiterate my commitment to the party and its grassroots. However, my concerns that the party is not ready to conduct free and fair election is evident for all to see,” Duffuor said at a press conference.

“Taking part in such would be akin to knowingly drinking from a poisoned calabash,” he added.

Despite defeats in 2016 and 2020 elections by incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, the former Ghanaian leader is eyeing a return to the Jubilee House – the seat of government.
