Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger ministers meet to consolidate Alliance of Sahel States

The ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States(AES) met in Ouagadougou on the 15 February to revise the AES charter and develop the Treaty on the Confederation of Sahel States

Ministers from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Thursday (15 February) met in Ouagadougou to consolidate Alliance of Sahel States

The meeting was focused on revising the charter of the AES and the development of the Treaty on the Confederation of Sahel States.

On 16 September, the AES was established by the countries.

In a meeting held in December 2023, the ministers recommended that the new Troika expand their objectives to include diplomacy and economic development.

This includes organising their communication processes and creating an AES logo.

The meeting was chaired by General Kassoum Coulibaly, Minister of Defense of Burkina Faso; Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Minister of Territorial Administration of Mali and General Salifou Mody, Minister of Defense of Niger.

The ministers also noted the states’ recent withdrawal from ECOWAS, noting the lack of efficiency of the regional bloc in a security context.

They emphasised the irreversible nature of the trio’s withdrawal from ECOWAS, noting that their withdrawal was necessary for proper integration.
