The former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac is one of three coaches shortlisted for the vacant managerial job, sources have told Asaase Sports.
On Monday, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced it had parted ways with head coach Charles (“CK”) Akonnor.
The GFA also announced a three-member recruitment committee made up of the GFA vice-president, Mark Addo, the Upper East Regional Football Association chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida, and Dr Randy Abbey.
The committees task is to find a head coach and assistant coaches for the Black Stars within the next 72 hours.
Sources have told Asaase Sports that the committee has pencilled the names of Milovan Rajevac, Otto Addo and George Boateng as potential replacements.
Rajevac previously coached the Black Stars in 2008 and finished as runner-up at the Cup of Nations in 2010, also narrowly missing out on a semi-final place in the 2010 World Cup to Uruguay. He left the Ghana job in September 2008 and subsequently joined Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia.
He left that job to take up the job of coach to the Qatari national team in 2011. He has since coached Slovenia’s Rudar Velenje, the Algerian national team and Thailand. He was the Thailand coach between 2017 and 2019.
CVs in the spotlight
Asaase Sports understands that one other coach who has been considered is Goerge Boateng. Sources say his curriculum vitae is already being perused by the three-member committee.
The ex-Dutch international first coached the Malaysian side Kelantan FA. He then took up the under-13s head coach post in the 2018-19 season. After just a season, Boateng left to coach the under-18 team at Aston Villa in the UK,m where he is now the club’s professional development coach.
The third coach on the list is Otto Addo, who, just like Boateng, is well respected in Ghanaian football circles. However, a careful look at his coaching history does not match the respect he commands.
The former Ghana international cut his coaching teeth at HSV in Hamburg, where he worked as a youth team and later assistant manager from 2009 to 2015. Two years later, he joined the German Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach as “talent coach”, a position he took at Borussia Dortmund in 2019.
In 2020, he made the step up, becoming the club’s assistant coach, and still occupies the position. Addo has previously scouted for the Black Stars, first in 2014 for the World Cup in Brazil, and at the Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea a year later.
The committee tasked with finding Akonnor’s replacement is expected to settle on one of the three coaches and submit the name to the GFA executive council within 48 hours.
