Massive decongestion exercise takes off in Koforidua

The exercise which began on Wednesday (9 March) in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council is intended to clear the streets of hawkers

The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly has begun an exercise to decongest the Eastern regional capital of Koforidua.

The exercise which began on Wednesday (9 March) in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council is intended to clear the streets of hawkers and also demolish unauthorised structures.

Some traders, however, expressed their disapproval of the exercise and urged the authorities to give them enough time to leave the streets.

They said they have nowhere to go.

“I have stayed here for the past 50 years and telling me to leave here will be difficult for me,” one trader lamented in conversation with Asaase News.

The Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong who led the exercise said it is going to be a continuous process until the needed result is achieved.

He eluded to the fact that such an exercise will not be easy but they will continue to engage the people.

“For us we are going to continue this exercise. We are not stopping, we will pursue it until we realise our beautiful city of Koforidua becomes a plan that everyone looks up to,” Acheampong said.

The Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South Isaac Appaw Gyasi was optimistic that the decongestion exercise will bring Koforidua to its past glory.
