Gyampo to Dampare: Make human relations a priority as IGP

The University of Ghana lecturer says the new IGP must enhance his human relations if he is to succeed

Professor Ransford Gyampo, an associate professor at the University of Ghana, has charged the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to make human relations one of his priorities in order to succeed.

The appointment of COP George Akuffo DampareĀ as the acting IGP by President Akufo-Addo has been widely embraced by Ghanaians.

However, speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (23 July), Professor Gyampo said: ā€œIt does appear that even though he is the most senior COP, even though he merits this appointment, it appears to me that the comments from within suggest that there is a little deficit in terms of how he relates both at the top and the grass roots.

ā€œSo human relations matter. My advice is that now that he has been appointed as acting ā€¦ I will expect that as he is being watched, he must demonstrate a certain leadership to bring all on board.

ā€œIf he does not work with his own people, and he is unable to deal with the seeming challenge of human relations, then it may be difficult for him,ā€ he said.

Professor Gyampo called on COP Dampare to rally everyone around to embrace his strategy.

Background

PresidentĀ Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-AddoĀ announced the appointment on Wednesday. COP Dampare will take over fromĀ James Oppong-Boanuh as the head of the Ghana Police Service from 1 August 2021.

Oppong-Boanuh has been the head of the Police Service since 14 August 2019, when the president appointed him, in accordance with the constitution of Ghana.

COP Dampare is the director general in charge of administration in the Police Service and a member of the Police Management Board.
