National Security denies cloning phone of #FixtheCountry convener

A convener of the campaign Oliver Barker-Vormanor alleges that his phone was cloned after depositing it at the ministry's reception during a meeting

Story Highlights
  • "Consistent with standard practices, the phones of all visitors are kept at the reception of the Ministry. The Ministry has no basis to and did not tamper with the phones of the conveners."

The Ministry of National Security has said claims being made by a convener of the #FixtheCountry protest that his phone has been cloned are “baseless and false.”

Oliver Barker-Vormanor alleged that his phone was cloned after depositing it at the ministry’s reception during a meeting.

In a statement, the ministry said the public should disregard the allegations, adding: “The Ministry has no basis to and did not tamper with the phones of
the convener.”

“In the publication, one Oliver Barker-Vormanor, a convener of the #FixtheCountry campaign alleged that operatives of the Ministry of National Security coerced
conveners into a meeting with Cabinet.

“He further alleged that, the operatives unlawfully cloned one of the phones of the conveners and assessed private chats. Consistent with standard practices, the phones of all visitors are kept at the reception of the Ministry. The Ministry has no basis to and did not tamper with the phones of the conveners,” the statement signed by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said.

It added: “The conveners were invited for a meeting to which they voluntarily attended. The allegation that they were coerced into a meeting is therefore untrue.

“Additionally, in instances where the Agencies of the Ministry have need to investigate the electronic devices of a person, legal methods such as a proper court warrant are employed. The phone cloning allegation is also therefore false and baseless. The public is therefore advised to disregard the said allegation.”

Black Sunday

Meanwhile, the organisers of the #FixTheCountry campaign are embarking on a virtual protest Sunday 9 May, appealing to Ghanaians to wear black and to upload the pictures online.

Their new approach follows an injunction placed on their planned protest on the streets of Accra on Sunday.

The organisers are also asking drivers to blow their horns for a minute on each hour between 1pm and 4pm.

In addition, they are also asking Ghanaians at home to bang on their utensils for a minute every hour between 1pm and 4pm.
