Nigeria election: Emmanuel Akwetey joins Commonwealth observation team

The observer group comprises 16 eminent persons from around the Commonwealth, including politicians, diplomats and experts in law, gender equality and election administration

Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, the executive director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) has joined some eminent persons from around the Commonwealth to observe the elections in Nigeria slated for Saturday 25 February 2023.

The observer group comprises 16 eminent persons from around the Commonwealth, including politicians, diplomats and experts in law, gender equality and election administration.

It is being led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

Observers will be deployed across the country from 23 February to observe the pre-election preparations as well as voting, counting and results processes at polling stations.

The team has been in Nigeria since 18 February for its seventh observer mission to Nigeria since 1999.  Its mandate is to observe and assess the pre-election period, activities on polling day and the post-election period.

The group will visit Sokoto, Lagos, Ondo, Benue, Kano, Edo and Rivers States. It will also observe elections in Abuja.

Candidates

Nigeria’s outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after nearly eight years in power amid a backdrop of chaos and widespread unrest, as many people are unable to access the cash they need to buy food because of a botched roll-out of new banknotes.

A total of 18 candidates are campaigning for the top job, but only three have a realistic chance of winning, according to opinion polls.
