Damongo: Residents in fear over siting of fuel station

Residents claim the fuel station belongs to Savannah Regional Minister Saeed Muhazu Jibril, and they are concerned that it is too close to their homes and will endanger them and the entire neighborhood if it is operational.

Some residents of Abingakura, a suburb of Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region now live in fear over the construction of a fuel station in the community.

Residents claim the fuel station belongs to Savannah Regional Minister Saeed Muhazu Jibril, and they are concerned that it is too close to their homes and will pose a risk to the entire neighbourhood if becomes operational.

Jima Ibrahim, a welder whose shop is just about 50 metres away from the fuel station told Asaase News that despite several complaints to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Damongo and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), they are yet to act.

He alleged that the minister had used all possible means to remove him from his own land since the construction of the fuel station started earlier this year.

“Three days ago he came to my shop here and removed his shirt to fight with me. He told me he gives me two weeks…” he said.

The welder, on the other hand, stated that he received a call on Friday (5 August) that someone had set fire to his shop.

Efforts by Asaase News to speak to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the region have proven futile.
