North East Region: Non-payment of water bills affecting our services, says CWSA

The CWSA's regional directorate is concerned about residents failure to pay their bills, which they say is a major challenge

The management of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) in the North East Region has said that the inability of customers to pay their water bills in the region is affecting the agency’s operations.

Speaking at the 25 anniversary of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency in Nalerigu, North East Region on Tuesday (27 February 2024), the Upper East regional director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Patrick Kwenin said, “Notwithstanding the successes chalked over the years, there have been challenges that threaten the sustainability of our achievements.”

“Frequent power fluctuations result in the breakdown of pumps and subsequent increased downtimes in water supply. High non-revenue water [and ] climatic conditions like floods,” he said.

Meanwhile, the agency has highlighted its achievements over the years in terms of employment and other successes since its reformation in 2017.

“The region has made significant strides under the reforms since 2017. These include: introduction of professionalism into the management of water systems by employing professionals like engineers, accountants, community relations officers, plumbers, and water safety specialists.”

However, the North East Regional Minister Yidana Zakaria urged CWSA management to find a solution to the groundwater quality challenges in Chereponi, which has a high fluoride content.

The theme of the celebration is “25 years of sustaining WASH services: transforming rural and small town water service delivery towards national development.”
