Northern Region: Three communities to receive telephony sites

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD), Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has commissioned three rural telephony sites in the Kumbungu and Tolon districts in the Northern Region on Saturday (29 July).

By 2024, 3,000 telephony sites will be built across the nation as part of the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project, which offers basic internet access and is being implemented by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

The beneficiary communities are Tibung, Jagriguyili and Nagbligu, located in the Kumbungu and Tolon Districts respectfully.

Speaking during a brief ceremony in Tibung, Owusu-Ekuful said that while it is capital-intensive and expensive to expand access to underprivileged areas, the government has taken a risk by bringing these isolated villages into the digital revolution, which would have shut them off from the rest of the world.

“This to me is one of the most important interventions that government could ever have done and this government has prioritized connectivity, a Rural Telephoney,” she added.

The cell sites are also designed to ease the stress locals face in trying to connect with the rest of the country and the world at large.

Work is also in progress in other Nine cell sites in the area and when fully activated, will bring the number to Twelve.

The CEO of GIFEC, Prince Ofosu Sefah assured the people of the area that his outfit is working tirelessly to activate the remaining 9 sites for them to have a full benefit of the project.

As part of bridging the digital divide in the country, Ursula also commissioned a Community ICT centre for the people of Tolon which she said is one of the 30 newly built ICT centres Nationwide.

Since mobile connection in the majority of the Northern area is a significant issue, this initiative will help these people communicate better and gain access to the internet.
