NPP parliamentary primaries: Navrongo MCE files nomination to fill Kofi Adda shoes

Joseph Adongo takes a shot in the primary as a new entrant, hoping to win and seize the parliamentary seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The chief executive of the Kassena-Nankana municipal assembly, Joseph Adongo, has filed his nomination to contest the Navrongo central New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary.

Adongo, a teacher who was elevated to office in 2021, takes a shot in the primary as a new entrant, hoping to win and seize the parliamentary seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He is among five aspirants who have picked up nominations to vie for the position of parliamentary candidate for the governing New Patriotic Party.

Addressing delegates on Friday (4 August) after a successful filing, Adongo promised good leadership, unity and to fill the shoes of his mentor, late former Member of Parliament for the area and Statesman Joseph Kofi Adda, to maximize development in the constituency.

Adongo explained that his many years of close association with Adda helped him to gain knowledge, experience and the grooming needed to provide sterling leadership and better representation in parliament for the people.

“When honourable Kofi Adda was alive, I worked closely with him and before his passing he had planned to help me do this. I have followed him both in government and in opposition and have learnt a lot from his great leadership. He has nurtured me enough and I believe I can step in his shoes if God permits, to continue with his good works,”

For Adongo, his role as the municipal chief executive, has made him well abreast and exposed to the difficulties facing the area and its people and that make him the suitable candidate capable of addressing them when eventually elected to parliament.

He said, “talking about addressing the pressing needs of the people, I can say I am more informed of their problems than anyone [other aspirants] in the constituency because I go out there as the MCE and I see their problems. People need water, roads, Agric inputs among others. And if I successfully go through this and I win, I will be the best person to address these challenges,”

Touching on uniting the supporters for a resounding victory in the 2024 general elections, Adongo assured to mend the cracks within the rank and file of the party in the constituency.

He pointed out with concern that the disunity among the party faithful in the constituency caused the party’s defeat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections.

He was, however, optimistic that his candidature would eliminate the acrimony and rebuild a united front for victory in the next general elections.

“The Navrongo seat is for the NPP, but what caused us to lose in the 2020 election was that we were not able to manage our differences. But with my candidature, all the people will be brought together. Whichever person is hurt, I will be ready and prepared to iron out the differences,”

He continued, “I will also make sure that I work with everybody devoid of individualism. The people must be made to understand that it is about the interest of the party first and not that of the interest of a few individuals. I have been with the people; I know their difficulties and I have gone through it. So, I will be able to let them come to the understanding of coming together to win the seat for the NPP.”
