Nunoo-Mensah: Politicising Ghana’s security services disturbing

Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah says there is lack of trust in the security services now because of the infiltration of politicians

Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, a former chief of defence staff of the Ghana Armed Forces has said it is disturbing for politicians to meddle in the affairs of the security services in the country.

An ad hoc committee of Parliament is investigating a police commander Supt George Asare and two others – the former director general (technical) of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah and the former Northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu – over a leaked tape about a plot to remove IGP George Akuffo Dampare.

In the leaked tape, COP Mensah was heard saying that the IGP is not championing the cause of the governing party and could let the NPP lose the 2024 elections.

“I trust soldiers, I believe in them, I have been through all the coups and counter coups and so on, it’s always the politician who will come and subvert the loyalty of the service,” Nunoo-Mensah said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (6 September).

“Today, I live not far from Burma Camp, what is happening in the police service is wrong,” he told the host Kwaku Nhyira-Addo. “I don’t blame the soldiers, the politicians are infiltrating the security service.”

“It is wrong, they should stop doing that, I have never plotted against anybody in the long years of my service to my country,” he added.

Nunoo-Mensah said there is lack of trust in the security services now because of the infiltration of politicians.
