Okoe Boye appointed NHIA CEO

The former Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku was a deputy minister of health in the first term of the Akufo-Addo government

President Akufo-Addo has appointed Dr Bernard Okoe Boye as the chief executive officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

His appointment takes effect from Tuesday 3 May 2022.

He will be taking over from Dr Lydia Dsane-Selby, who has worked with the NHIA for over 14 years.

Dr Dsane-Selby has 12 years of experience with the organisation, including four years each as the director of clinical audit and the director of claims management and two years as the deputy chief executive in charge of operations.

Read the appointment letter below:

Okoe Boye, a former MP for Ledzokuku in the Greater Accra Region, was a deputy health minister during the first term of the Akufo-Addo government, with a brief to support the Minister of Health in the fight against Ghana’s first outbreak of COVID-19.

However, he lost that position when he was unable to retain the Ledzokuku seat in Parliament in the 2020 general election.

Early life and education

Dr Bernard Okoe Boye comes from Teshie, one of the major settlement areas in the constituency where he served as MP.

He attended the Field Engineers’ Junior High School for his Basic Education Certificate.

He is a past student of the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon), where he completed his secondary education in the year 2000.

He is a licensed medical practitioner by profession, with a BSc in human biology, medicine and surgery from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

He also holds a Master’s degree in public health (MPH) from the Hamburg School of Applied Science and an A1 certificate in German from the Geothe Institute, Accra.

State health experience

Dr Okoe-Boye served his housemanship under the Ghana Health Service from 2009 to 2012 at the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast, working in the department of surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology from 2009 to 2011.

He then worked in the department of internal medicine at Tema General Hospital.

He continued as a medical officer in the same institution for four years, also serving on secondment at Kibi Government Hospital, again in its department of obstetrics and gynaecology, and also at the La General Hospital.

In his last posting before he entered Parliament, Oko-Boye was a medical officer at the LekMA Hospital in Accra.
