Operation clean your frontage: Arrests start on 26 April

Under the "Operation Clean Your Frontage" initiative, city guards will take action against those whose surroundings are submerged in dirt

The government will from Tuesday (26 April) begin arresting and prosecuting citizens in the capital, Accra who litter their frontage, the regional minister has served notice.

Under the “Operation Clean Your Frontage” initiative, city guards will take action against those whose surroundings are submerged in dirt.

Close to 1000 personnel have been trained as part of the city response team to enforce compliance with sanitation by-laws in the Greater Accra Region.

The regional minister Henry Quartey has cautioned residents of Accra and business owners to comply with local government laws to avoid prosecution.

“Operation Clean Your Frontage is a by-law, passed and duly gazetted,” Quartey said. “If you are found dumping refuse indiscriminately, we have a law now to grab and prosecute you.”

He added: “Come Tuesday, 1,000 men and women drawn from the Greater Accra Region have undergone intensive training at the Bundase Military Camp. On Tuesday, we will outdoor them. Under ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’, you are to clean your house, immediate surroundings to the middle of the street. If you don’t do that, the law will catch you.”

“Traders selling at unauthorised places should move to designated places to conduct business without fail. From this day on, the call centre will be here and all the MMDAs will have call centres manned by NSS personnel and a taskforce led by ex-military officers. We expect that when a message is sent through the call centre, there will be a response within a maximum of one hour, in real-time, due to the traffic situation,” Quartey said.

A secretariat has been set up to receive complaints and coordinate activities between the various MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region for prompt action.
