Opoku-Mensah: Ablakwa must be called to order over lies against National Cathedral

Ablakwa, who has been vocal about the cathedral project, had over the past few weeks among others alleged the National Cathedral was registered as a private entity

Paul Opoku-Mensah, the executive director of the National Cathedral of Ghana wants the MP of North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to be called to order over what he termed unsubstantiated allegation against the national project.

Ablakwa, who has been vocal about the cathedral project, had over the past few weeks among others alleged the National Cathedral was registered as a private entity.

Reacting to the development on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (22 June), Opoku-Mensah said the allegation has the potential of tarnishing the president’s image and that of other dignitaries associated with the project.

“The issues that are being bandied around are critical issues that can sink this country… I understand the political context, the competition in the politics, but really there is a certain threshold that we shouldn’t fall under,” Opoku-Mensah said.

“If we have almost serious breaches that you think have happened, we do have institutions, and so for me it’s a plea, this country should not fall under a certain threshold.

“And our political leaders really have to be called to order, a parliamentarian cannot and should not be allowed to come bandying accusations without providing evidence, and if these things are really true, why don’t they call for investigations,” Opoku-Mensah added.

Nothing fishy about National Cathedral

Opoku-Mensah in an earlier interview on Asaase 99.5 Accra advised individuals who suspect any fishy deal in connection with the construction of the cathedral to go to court.

The government has come under criticism recently, following reports that it has released GHC25 million by way of additional seed capital to build the cathedral.

ā€œWhy do we subject this nation to all these tension when these are procedural issues,ā€ Opoku-Mensah asked, speaking onĀ The Asaase Breakfast ShowĀ on Monday (20 June 2022). ā€œThat is part of the reasons why I wrote the seven-page thesis [a press release by Dr Opoku-Mensah issued on 16 June].

ā€œIt was really to say could we almost hold fire, can we stop, because the issues we are fighting about are procedural issues?

ā€œFor instance, you talk about architects and percentages ā€¦ if you think there is some criminality, why donā€™t we call for a review?

ā€œWhy do we subject the nation, year after year for four years, to this intense build-up? Letā€™s now begin to have a rational conversation on the National Cathedral,ā€ Opoku-Mensah said.
