Pupils of Tokuroano RC Basic School in the Krachi East municipality of the Oti Region carry homemade chairs and tables to school to learn due to lack of furniture at the learning facility.
Some of the students are compelled to sit on the bare floor to study during learning hours, Asaase News checks indicate.
A few of the dual desks in the school are no longer in good condition forcing the pupils to place their books or examination papers on their laps while some were spotted using kitchen stools to write on.
“We are not happy with this condition,” a pupil, who spoke to Asaase News on condition of anonymity, fearing sanctions by school officials, said. The students complained about their uniforms getting dirty as a result of sitting on the floor during lesson hours.
“We have been sitting on the bare floor or bringing our own tables and chairs because we do not have furniture in our classrooms, and the few we have cannot accommodate us. Sometimes, we lose concentration during classes because of this condition,” another student said.
Appeal for support
“We want the authorities or philanthropists to come to our aid by providing us with furniture so that we can take our studies seriously,” another pupil said.
Speaking to Asaase News, Cynthia Adzoda, a creative arts and career technology teacher in the school, lamented about the challenges her students go through each day.
“About six to seven years ago, the municipal assembly provided a functional desk for the school, but since then, there has not been any other provision made for the school, even though other mother schools have received their furniture,” Adzoda said.
“I am therefore appealing to the assembly and the stakeholders to respond to the needs of the students,” she added.
Education watchers say the situation in the school is adversely affecting effective teaching and learning.
Officials of the municipal education directorate were not readily available for comemnt.
