Police prevent angry youth from attacking Barekese chief

Nana Amoapem Brenya II's palace came under attack on Sunday (21 August) when he was preparing to celebrate Akwasidae, a sacred festival observed by the Asante Kingdom

Police officers deployed to Barekese in the Ashanti Region prevented some irate youth from attacking the chief of the area.

Nana Amoapem Brenya II’s palace came under attack on Sunday (21 August) when he was preparing to celebrate Akwasidae, a sacred festival observed by the Asante Kingdom.

The traditional ruler who has been accused of stifling development in the area and allegedly deploying thugs to terrorise land owners, needed heavy police protection to leave his besieged palace.

In a video intercepted by Asaase News, the armed policemen had formed a human barricade as the chief and his subjects left the palace into a waiting vehicle.

Some angry residents threw objects in his direction and hooted at him.

“He has been the bane of our lives,” said Akwasi Hene, the spokesperson of the angry youth. “We [the youth of Barekese] keep suffering because of him. He has deployed land guards to terrorise us. We are appealing to the Manhyia Palace to intervene. We can’t live with this man.”

Security has since been reinforced in the Atwima District town at the time of filing this report. The police was yet to confirm any arrest.
