Profiles: The four NPP aspiring presidential candidates

The final process in selecting a flagbearer for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) comes off this Saturday 4 November

With the fervour of the 2024 presidential election reaching new heights, the ruling NPP’s presidential primary election, an essential event of the year for the party, will take place this Saturday, the 4 November.

The biggest political event of 2023 is finally here; the intense contest to choose who would be the flagbearer of the NPP in the 2024 presidential election is nearing its conclusion.

Four candidates are set to battle it out after months of campaigning across the country to woo delegates of the NPP.

The four aspiring presidential candidates are Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Mahamudu Bawumia.

The final process in selecting a flagbearer for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) comes off this Saturday, 4 November.

Below are the profiles of the candidates:

    1. KENNEDY AGYAPONG

Kennedy Agyapong on Asaase Radio’s “Sunday Night”/New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, born on 16 June 1960, is a Ghanaian politician and businessman who represents Assin Central in parliament for the New Patriotic Party.

He was first elected MP in 2000 for the seat of Assin North. He retained his seat in the 2004 and 2008 parliamentary elections.

In 2012, he was elected to the new seat of Assin Central and was re-elected in 2016. He also retained his seat in the 2020 general elections. He is currently the chairman of the Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee and an aspirant for the presidency on the NPP ticket.

Agyapong has never lost an election but faced questioning for contempt of Parliament in July 2018.

2. FRANCIS ADDAI-NIMOH

Francis Addai-Nimoh

Francis Addai-Nimoh was born on 23 March 1965. He is a development planner and civil engineer by profession. In 2008, he contested for the Mampong constituency seat on the NPP ticket, won, and continued to serve in parliament until January 2017.

He contested the NPP’s presidential primaries in 2014 and lost.  After losing the NPP flagbearer bid in 2014, he attempted re-election in the parliamentary primary of the NPP in 2015 and lost.

Since taking leave from Parliament in 2017, Addai-Nimoh has become MD of his firm, Franstan Limited, overseeing construction projects and other endeavours involving the general distribution of supplies, namely bitumen.

Addai-Nimoh has worked for several engineering firms in the past. During his time in the industry, he gained valuable experience in data collection, road design, contract specification, construction supervision, and bitumen production.

In 2004, the Ministry of Roads and Highways hired him as a senior engineer responsible for monitoring and evaluating all government road projects.

3. DR. AFRIYIE AKOTO

Owusu Afriyie Akoto (born 19 October 1949) is a Ghanaian agricultural economist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament for the Kwadaso Constituency from 2009 to 2017. He also previously held the position of Agriculture Minister.

Afriyie Akoto was employed by the International Coffee Organisation in London, England, for over a decade. Among the positions he held include economist, senior economist, principal economist, and chief economic advisor. He also served as a consultant to the World Bank (a United Nations agency) on soft commodities—namely, cocoa, coffee, and sugar.

He is credited for designing and implementing the government’s flagship Planting for Food and Jobs programme, which was launched on 19 April 2017.

4. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA

Mahamudu Bawumia

Bawumia was born on 7 October, 1963. He is the current vice-president of Ghana. Bawumia was a deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana until he was nominated the vice presidential candidate of the NPP in 2008, standing alongside presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo.

As a running mate, he ran alongside Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 general elections. He was the lead witness for the petitioners in the 2012/2013 Presidential Election Petition, which challenged the declaration of John Mahama as the election winner.

Under the leadership of the current administration, Dr. Bawumia’s digitalisation legacy has been a crucial catalyst in driving economic transformation.
