Election 2024: Let’s uphold Ghana’s democratic integrity, Otumfuo urges EC and political parties

Speaking at the 57th congregation of the KNUST over the weekend, the Asantehene stressed the need for political parties and their supporters to desist from “politics of insults, attacks and political violence"

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has charged Ghanaians to reaffirm their dedication to the country’s democratic process, as the nation gears up for the 2024 polls.

Speaking at the 57th congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) over the weekend, the Asante monarch also stressed the need for political parties and their supporters to uphold the integrity of discourse and desist from “politics of insults, attacks and political violence”.

“As the campaign temperature gains momentum, it is incumbent that stakeholders especially political parties and their teeming supporters uphold the sanctity of discourse and refrain from the propagation of divisive rhetoric and incendiary language”.

He further admonished the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure a free and fair election.

“Ghana, our beloved nature should reaffirm our dedication to democratic principles as we prepare and navigate the electoral process once more, and the EC should ensure fairness and be seen as an impartial habitat in the electoral process.

“Our collective aspiration should be to establish an environment of mutual respect and constructive dialogue. Let’s all once again show the world that we are indeed a democratic nation,” Otumfuo stressed.

He also called on the political parties to engage in political campaigns that drive the youth in economic development.

Meanwhile, the National Peace Council says it has put a lot of mechanisms in place to ensure the upcoming general elections are conducted in a peaceful, transparent manner.

According to the council, comprehensive engagement with the key actors within Ghana’s political structure avails the opportunity for grievances to be dealt with ahead of the December polls.

“Dispute mediating trainings have been created to equip political parties to find solutions to problems that may arise in their space,” executive secretary of the National Peace Council, George Amoh told Asaase News.
