Samini: “Asaase Sound Clash beef was a media strategy”

The dancehall legend reveals that a string of rants on social media don’t reflect bad feeling against Stonebwoy or Shatta

Samini, the award-winning dancehall artist, has revealed that his recent social media rants about the Asaase Sound Clash were just a tactic to get him to trend.

Samini revealed the secret in an exclusive interview with Asaase Radio.

Samini was in conversation on Thursday with Seani B, the international disc jockey with a regular show on BBC Radio 1Xtra in London who also runs a syndicated dancehall show on the Ghana-based Asaase Radio (99.5 Mhz).

The dancehall don was speaking live from Canada, where he has been held in quarantine since March.

Short cut to trending

Confiding in Seani B, who is currently in Ghana to host tonight’s highly anticipated sound clash by Asaase Radio, Samini disclosed that his live social media videos were a ploy to pull numbers.

“My rants on social media about the clash was [a move] to have me trend, and I achieved that. It was my smart way to get involved as well.

“There is still unfinished business between me and Shatta Wale.

“I wasn’t surprised to see Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale’s names come up for the Sound Clash.

“My longevity in the game is good reason enough to include me in a sound clash such as this one. I don’t see the reason why anyone would disagree with me on this,” he said.

HighGrade + Bhim are “family for ever”

Describing his relationship with the Bhim Nation president, Stonebwoy, Samini said: “I don’t see me and Stonebwoy having a ‘head-on’ sound clash in a competitive bout because ‘father and son’ don’t have to do that.

“Perhaps it would have to be a family vibe, sort of, with Stonebwoy on the microphone.

“If anything, between me and Stonebwoy on the microphone it will be more like a party clash and not anything so serious.

“It still remains a family thing between me and Stonebwoy for ever. HighGrade Family and Bhim Nation are family for ever and I won’t change that narrative.”

Hat tip to Asaase

Samini congratulated Asaase Radio for championing such a vibrant initiative to keep the Ghanaian reggae/dancehall scene alive.

“I am proud of the genre I am part of,” Samini said. “Aside my concerns raised, I am singularly excited about this. It is the best thing to ever happen in the history of Ghanaian reggae/dancehall music.

“And the bigger reason for the clash, which is to crush COVID-19, even makes me doff my hat for Asaase Radio 99.5 FM.”

Touching on his own contribution to the genre, the hit-making factory said: “I’m the one who brought Mavado and Popcaan to Ghana some years ago.

“I’ve been in the music game for a very long time. I should have been in Ghana for the #AsaaseSoundClash but I’m out of the country at the moment.

“I’ve been doing music for so long, since my days as a teenager, right from 18 years. The journey has been great. I’m currently 38 years old so I can boldly say I’m the longest recording reggae/dancehall artiste in Ghana.”

The Asaase Sound Clash competition is scheduled for tonight, Saturday 12 September, in Accra (starts 8pm).

You can decide who wins the Sound Clash by voting for either one of the big boys of dancehall – Shatta Wale or Stonebwoy – by calling the short codes *800*995*1# for Shatta Wale and *800*995*2# for Stonebwoy. And the more you vote, the better your chances of winning the top prize: a Mahindra KUV 100.

If you’re in it just for fun, you can call in to the Asaase Radio studios to take part in the 10-Second Clash2CrushCOVID Challenge on 020 000 9951 or 020 000 9952. Say “Clash to crush COVID” clearly as many times as you can within the time limit. There are special prizes to be won.

I anticipate Shatta Wale vs Stonebwoy ‘Asaase Sound Clash’ to be bigger than Bounty Killer vs Beenie Man Verzuz — Walshy Fire (Major Lazer)
