Six fascinating Ghanaian renditions of Christmas Carols

Here is a sampling of six Ghanaian renditions of Christmas Carols to make your celebrations warmer and more exciting

Christmas carols add a certain magic to an otherwise normal ambience, setting the tone for the yuletide and filling us with nostalgic memories of years gone by.

Whether you love them or not, when you hear a carol being played you might nod or even sing along. Carols set the Christmas season apart from the rest of the months, reminding us that indeed the year is ending.

Although Christmas Carol is not a traditional African culture, over the years some Ghanaian artistes have taken to adding their own spice to already existing ones to create beautiful African renditions of Christmas songs that we already know and enjoy.

From classy jazz tunes, to some lively African rhythms harmonized with interesting comical lyrics, here is a sampling of six Ghanaian renditions of Christmas Carols to make your Christmas warmer and more exciting.

Irene Logan – Have Yourself a merry little Christmas

The beautiful songstress comes back from a long break from music to release this latest Christmas single.

Kwan Pa Band – 5 Days of Christmas

The Palmwine singers have been entertaining their fans and listeners with the interesting, innovative lyrics of their Christmas carols. This is their version of widely loved and listened to ‘12 Days of Christmas’ Carol.

Kwan Pa Band – Felix Cannot Dance

The lyrically versatile Palmwine singers sing a merry, humorous rendition of Jose Feliciano’s ‘Feliz Navidad.’

Eshun – Afe hyia pa!

Eshun’s version of ‘Afe hyia pa’ is a beautiful rendition of “Afe ako aporo”. She opens the lovely piece singing her version of ‘Jingle Bells’ where she dashes “through the sun on the road with glasses on”.

NaaNa Blu – Afehyia pa!

NaaNa Blu, a young singer who mostly sings her own renditions of original songs like Kofi Kinaata’s ‘Nyamesom Pa’, sings her version of ‘Oh Come All Ye Faithful’ with a touch of Ghanaian flavor.

NaCee – Afehyia pa!

Afehyia pa! is a Christmas greeting in Akan – a Ghanaian local dialect – which literally translates to mean “Good year meeting” to which you respond “Afe nko meto yen bio” (may the year go and meet us again). Put on your dancing shoes and groove to NaCee’s song about celebrations at the end of year and on all other anniversaries in life.
