SOS: Rachel, three, needs GHC92,000 for reconstructive surgery

When she was about 11 months old, Rachel suffered third-degree burns after she was engulfed in flames triggered by gasoline and matches

Three-year-old Rachel Nyarko needs GHC92,000 to undergo reconstructive surgery to correct defects she suffered through fire burns.

Speaking on Asaase Café 985 on Asaase 98.5 Kumasi, Rachel’s mother, Esther Agyei, said, “I went home to prepare food and as I lit the matches, the floor caught fire, and I was in shock.

“I later realised that gasoline from a dripping car tank had been collected and placed there. I picked up my daughter and started calling for help, but to no avail.

“I put her down and tried opening the door, but that proved futile, too,” she recalled.

“It was too late when people arrived because my daughter was engulfed in flames, and we had sustained various degrees of burns. We were later rushed to the hospital for emergency attention.”

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) carried out a series of procedures on Rachel to make her situation better, but they say reconstructive surgery is their best option to give the little girl a chance of living a normal social life again.

According to Agyei, “We encounter a lot of discrimination and humiliation daily. What makes me sad is the fact that, any time Rachel tries to go out to play with the kids in the neighbourhood, parents and children will begin calling her unprintable names.

“It breaks my heart that they refer to my child as ‘an animal’. I confronted them on one occasion, and they caused me to be arrested,” Rachel’s mother said.

Charlotte Addo, a philanthropist, reached out to Asaase 98.5 to assist Rachel in raising GHC92,000 for reconstructive surgery.

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have, however, given their assurance that a half-payment of roughly GHC46,000 will be enough to begin the surgery that will give little Rachel a chance to lead a normal life again.
