Bawumia to Black Princesses: We’ll reward you for World Cup qualification
Ghana defeated Ethiopia 2-1 on Sunday (27 March) to secure qualification to the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Costa Rica
The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said the government will reward the national Under 20 female team, the Black Princesses for qualifying to the World Cup.
The Black Princesses’s last month booked their sixth successive appearance at the World Cup after beating Ethiopia.
Addressing the team at the Jubilee House on Tuesday (5 April), Bawumia said the government will ensure it gives the team the requisite support to enhance their preparation for the upcoming tournament.
“This afternoon, I welcomed the national female Under 20 football team, the Black Princesses, to the Jubilee House, following their qualification to the 2022 FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
“The Black Princesses’ qualification marks the team’s sixth successive appearance at the World Cup, and this impressive feat is matched only by the Black Starlets, who also played in six successive Under 17 FIFA World Cups between 1989 in Scotland and 1999 in New Zealand.”
“On behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana, I congratulated the team for its qualification and also urged the players to go all out and make an impact at the World Cup. I assured them of government’s continuous support, especially towards their preparations for the World Cup, and informed them about a special package the President has promised for their qualification,” he added.
Black Princesses book sixth successive World Cup appearance

After a three-nil first-leg victory at Addis Ababa’s Abebe Bikila Stadium, the Black Princesses sealed a 5-1 aggregate victory.
Salamtu Abdulai scored twice to make it four goals against the same opponent in the two-leg tie.
Her first came in the second minute, producing a great finish.
After 25 minutes, Abdulai slotted a low shot past the Ethiopia goalkeeper from inside the box after being put through by Cecilia Nyama.
The Ethiopians pulled one back just before the half-hour mark.
They also had two goals disallowed for offside.
