Missing AngloGold Ashanti miner found dead

The miner was confirmed dead on Saturday after 11 days of rescue operation following a ground collapse at the Obuasi mine

A worker of AngloGold Ashanti who was declared missing following a ground collapse at the Obuasi mine on 18 May 2021 has been found dead, a statement from the firm said.

The statement said the body of Daniel Nuertey-Kwao Quaynortey was discovered on Saturday 29 May 2021 by mine rescue teams.

“Daniel’s family have been informed of this unfortunate outcome and are being given support in this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them. May his soul rest in peace.

Quaynortey was an employee of Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), a company contracted by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine. Quaynortey, 46, is survived by his wife and three children.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of our deceased colleague. May his soul rest in peace. Our gratitude goes to the mine rescue teams for their efforts over this period,” the statement said.

AngloGold Ashanti has since suspended its annual production for the mine until “it was declared safe to resume.”

“A thorough investigation into the incident has been initiated. As previously announced, underground mining activities were voluntarily suspended at the time of the incident and will remain so pending an in-depth area-by-area assessment of the mine design, mine schedule and ground management plans, before progressively releasing mining areas for a phased resumption in production,” the statement said.
