Two male students of the Fumbisi Senior High School in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region, have suffered broken legs in a tribal clash that broke out in the school on Wednesday (15 March).
Scores of other male students have also been left with minor injuries in the skirmishes.
Reprisal violent attacks erupted Wednesday night between students of the school from Bawku and the Union of Builsa Students of the school, following an earlier attack on Tuesday (14 March) on a Builsa student.
Reports said three students of the school from Bawku Tuesday allegedly beat up a house prefect, for standing against their maltreatment of a junior student.
The reports said the three senior male students got angered by the action of the house prefect and so launched an attack and beat him up mercilessly.
The attack on the house prefect who is a Builsa student triggered anger among the community of Builsa students in the school, who went out attacking students of Bawku extraction.
The district chief executive for the area, Daniel Gariba, who confirmed the incident to Asaase News, said the police were called in to bring the situation under control.
He said two students were later discovered with broken legs and have since been transported to a private bone specialist facility in Zuarungu for the necessary medical attention.
Following the disturbances, final-year male students of the school have been asked to vacate the school premises.
DCE Gariba said it was a decision reached by the District Security Council (DISEC) and the regional directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
He said the decision was taken to allow for an investigation to take place and also help restore calm.
“When we assessed the situation, we realised the problem (violence) was dominantly orchestrated by the final-year students. So, we thought that if we allow them to sleep again this night, the situation will be worse. So, we decided that all third-year students who are males should go home”, Gariba said.
