Lack of infrastructure affecting academic work at Navio D/A primary school

Currently, the management of the school has converted a teacher's quarters to serve as a kindergarten to accommodate the huge numbers of enrolment

The unavailability of basic infrastructure at the Navio D/A primary school in Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District is negatively impacting teaching and learning.

Despite chalking six decades of providing basic education to children in Navio and surrounding communities, the school still lacks basic necessities such as an Information Communication Technology centre, nursery classroom block, staff office, and access to electricity, among others needed to aid effective teaching and learning.

Currently, the management of the school has converted a teacher’s quarters to serve as a kindergarten to accommodate the huge numbers of enrolment.

The headteacher of the school, Cosmas Adoctor, who was speaking at its 60th-anniversary celebration, said the situation was worrying as the quarters currently holding the kindergarten is small and unable to fully accommodate the pupils.

“Here, we don’t know what is called headteacher’s office and staff common room. The trees are our office and staff common room. More worrying ladies and gentlemen, the kindergarten section has no classroom. The school has a flourishing KG and yet there is no room for them to be accommodated there.

“We have used the headteacher’s quarters as their classrooms which is even too small to contain them.”- Adoctor bemoaned.”

Adoctor said another worrying issue which was also derailing teachers’ efforts in giving pupils quality education, was a failure on the part of parents to provide their wards with learning materials such as books and pencils.

He said it was very common in the school to see pupils coming to school without learning materials.

While he reiterated the commitment of the school to impart knowledge to pupils, he urged parents and guardians to be responsible towards the education of their wards.

For his part, the chief of Navio, Adams Kwarasey Parejei Adurigola II, led a fundraiser with a donation of ghc300 towards the construction of a kindergarten block.

He assured his commitment to see to the full construction of the kindergarten block.

The 60th-anniversary celebration of Navio D/A primary school was on the theme, “Navio D/A Primary School @60: The Past, Present and the Future – A Collective Responsibility.”
