We’re ready to assist NPA to collect right taxes from OMCs, says Benab Oil MD

Prosper Kporku says the NPA must reach out to the OMCs to help the country receive the right taxes from industry players

Prosper Kporku, the managing director of Benab Oil says the Oil Marketing Companies are ready to assist the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to collect taxes due the country from the oil sector.

Speaking with Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe on Energy 101 programme, Kporku said “People are even selling way below the cost of the product, I mean the ex-refinery price plus government taxes and margins. People are selling way below that one, I don’t know if they are non-profit making organisations or what or what kind of business is it…

“Ideally, even if you decide not to make any commission at all then your display price or the selling price should be equal to the price at which you are sourcing the product plus the mandatory government taxes and margins but people are selling the product at very low prices,” he said.

Kporku added, “So going forward, some of us think that the regulator should watch [the market] very well. I think that there should be a body within the fold of the regulator and invite us [OMCs] to meet you [the regulator] to bring our particulars to support how much you selling your product because the same regulator that is regulating the BDCs also regulates the OMCs. So I should be able to mention that this is where I am getting my products from”

He is, however, urging the regulator to set a sealing within which the OMCs can sell their products.

“Why not the regulator setting a limit where you can’t sell below that price because the regulator is determined to ensure that you are collecting the right taxes for the government,” he said
