Eight teams battle it out for one of the four spots in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers

The draw for the Preliminary Round of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) unfolded on Tuesday (20 February), showcasing the path for the eight lowest-ranked African nations, as determined by FIFA rankings, to secure their spots in the main qualifiers.

Held in Cairo, Egypt, this draw set the stage for an intense battle among emerging footballing nations.

The participating teams in this preliminary round include Somalia, Djibouti, São Tomé and Príncipe, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia, and Eswatini. Each team is poised to seize the opportunity to elevate their status in African football and make their mark on the global stage.

The draw results are as follows:

Somalia vs Eswatini

São Tomé and Príncipe vs South Sudan

Chad vs Mauritius

Djibouti vs Liberia

These matchups promise thrilling football action as teams strive to secure their place in the subsequent group stage, where they will be joined by the 44 exempt nations.

The preliminary round of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF AFCON will follow a home-and-away format, with fixtures scheduled between 20 and 26 March, 2024.
