Akufo-Addo: Nigeria and Ghana clash will deepen bond between two rivals

Akufo-Addo says the World Cup playoff between Nigeria and Ghana will deepen the friendship between the two countries

Story Highlights
  • "There are healthier and happier events when we clash in sports. I believe an encounter on the football fields between our two countries remains one of the best in the world."

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is optimistic that today’s World Cup qualifying game between Ghana and Nigeria at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi will deepen the friendship between the two West African neighbours.

Addressing the 20th anniversary celebration of the passing of Shehu Musa Yar’Adua in Abuja, Nigeria, Akufo-Addo said: “But for musicians Shatta Wale of Ghana and Burna Boy of Nigeria threatening to spark off a diplomatic incident recently, Nigeria and Ghana have always been siblings even though we quarrel and disagree occasionally, we love each other.”

“There are healthier and happier events when we clash in sports. I believe an encounter on the football fields between our two countries remains one of the best in the world.

“I have no doubt that the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches between our two countries which begins with a tie in Kumasi will provide another colourful chapter in the annals of the rivalry,” Akufo-Addo said.

CAF approves 40,000 spectators for Ghana – Nigeria clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved Ghana’s request to admit 40,000 spectators for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 play-off first leg match against Nigeria at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

This comes after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) request to play the game in full capacity stadium following the laid-down rules by CAF.

“The GFA consequently advise all Ghanaians to obey all laid-down safety and security measures strictly to first and foremost have a successful match and also to avoid any sanctions from CAF and FIFA,” a statement from the FA said.

It added: “Meanwhile, fans are advised to strictly adhere to the designated spectator and stakeholders entry points and gates for verification of their tickets.”
