Akufo-Addo’s second year as ECOWAS chair ends
Akufo-Addo will host his colleagues from the 12 ECOWAS member nations in Accra on 3 July 2022 at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel
The 61st Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS heads of state and government will be held in Accra on 3 July 2022, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel to commemorate the end of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second year as chair of the bloc.
Akufo-Addo will host his colleagues from the 12 ECOWAS member nations.
President Akufo-Addo’s mandate was renewed for another year in June 2021, based on his sterling leadership and the completion of ongoing institutional reforms aimed at reducing the number of statutory appointees of the ECOWAS Commission from 15 to seven and streamlining operational costs.
Among other things, the Summit will examine and make decisions on the region’s political, security, and humanitarian issues.
Prior to the summit, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and chair of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, welcomed her fellow Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security for the mediation and security council meeting in Accra.
The meeting of the mediation and security council will offer updates on political events in the area, particularly in Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso, as well as in the Sahel region.
They will also present updates on the general security situation, difficulties associated with young unemployment, and the impact of illnesses and pandemics on social tensions in the region.
