Asamoah Gyan must raise the next generation of legends, says Appiah

Ghana football legend, Asamoah Gyan, announced on Tuesday (20 June) that he has retired from active football after sharing his story during a panel session at the just ended Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM2023) in Accra

Former Black Star Captain, Stephen Appiah has opined that his colleague Asamoah Gyan must contribute to raising the next generation of legends in football.

Ghana football legend, Asamoah Gyan, announced on Tuesday (20 June) that he has retired from active football after sharing his story during a panel session at the just ended Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM2023) in Accra.

“It is time… that voice has been clear in my ears, and I have succumbed to it, it is time. It is time to hang the jersey and boots in glory as I retire officially from active football,” the 37-year-old broke down before his audience at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

Reacting to the development on Wednesday (21 June), Appiah said Asamoah Gyan exhibited passion throughout his career.

‘Up to the twilight of your career till your retirement there’s one thing I’ve seen you exhibit, PASSION.””

“I want you to know that it is only an end to a chapter. You have more to contribute to raising the next generation of legends. A career well-lived bro… Wish you well.,” Appiah tweeted.

Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals after making 109 appearances as striker of the Black Stars. Baby Jet, as he is affectionately called, began his professional career in 2003 with Liberty Professionals in Ghana. He has had stints with clubs in France, England, Turkey, China, and the United Arab Emirates.

He was part of Ghana’s maiden World Cup squad in 2006 in Germany that finished in the round of 16 and the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
