Asante Kotoko justifies signing of Razak Abalora

Goalkeeper Razak Abalora joins Asante Kotoko as a free agent after his contract with Azam FC expired

Moses Antwi Benefo, communications manager for Kumasi Asante Kotoko, says the club’s acquisition of Razak Abalora is consistent with their ambition to assemble a competitive squad.

Asante Kotoko has announced the signing of the Black Stars goalkeeper Razak Abalora on a three-year deal.

The former West African Football Academy goalkeeper joined Asante Kotoko as a free agent, following the expiration of his contract with a Tanzanian side, Azam FC.

While the signing has excited some of the club’s followers, fans and journalists alike have expressed concern about whether it is necessary. However, Moses Antwi Benefo thinks that the signing is justified.

“If you’ll recall, Nana Yaw Amponsah [the chief executive officer of the Asante Kotoko football club] recently announced that the team’s squad would have a formula of 4-8-8-2. That is: four goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders, four strikers, four youth players promoted to join the senior side, and two marquee players. We are on track with that,” he said.

‘‘Kwame Baah, Ibrahim Danlad, and Felix Annan are the three goalkeepers who are currently with the team. Now we have Razak Abalora.”

Champions League

P J Mozey, as he is affectionately called, also argued that Abalora’s signing reinforces the club’s commitment to building the best squad possible.

“We are also going to participate in the CAF Champions League, and for that, we have to parade the best squad possible – and that is exactly what we’re doing,” he said.

Abalora will now join his teammates in Koforidua, where Kotoko is currently in pre-season camping.

He faces competition from the club captain, Felix Annan, and first-choice goalkeeper, Kwame Baah.
