Ashanti youth groups: We’ll close down Lighthouse Chapel

The groups have described a viral audio remark made by the founder of Lighthouse Chapel as a grand scheme to defame the Asantehene

At least five youth groups in the Ashanti Region have threatened to close down all the branches of the Lighthouse Chapel in the region following comments made by its founder against the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

According to the group, a viral comment made by Bishop Dag Heward-Mills is part of a grand scheme to defame the Asante monarch.

The main group comprising Kumasi Youth Association, Asante Youth Association among others is calling on Bishop Heward-Mills to seek “wise counsel” on the development or face their wrath.

The Secretary of Kumasi Youth Association, Kwabena Frimpong who addressed a news conference in Kumasi on Monday 21 June called on the founder of the Lighthouse Chapel to act within 48 hours or face their wrath.

“We are calling on Bishop Dag to seek wise counsel within 48 hours. Otherwise, none of his churches in the Asanteman enclave will be allowed to operate.

“Also, we are warning all and sundry who hide behind religion and politics to push this evil agenda against Asanteman and his royal majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu. We will let them know that we will meet them up with brute force,” Frimpong served notice.

Dag Heward-Mills apologises

Meanwhile, Bishop Heward-Mills has rendered an unqualified apology to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over his 20-year sermon about him.

In a statement issued over the weekend, Bishop Heward-Mills apologised to the Asantehene, explaining that the message was preached nearly 20 years ago but had been taken out of context and maliciously circulated.

He alleged that the message was maliciously re-shared by certain individuals who had previously threatened to close down branches of his church in Kumasi.

He, however, thanked the king for handling the matter courteously.
