The Ministry of Interior has announced a review of the curfew hours in Nkwanta South township, extending the time from 6pm to 6am.
This is to aid the daily activities of the residents within the area.
Nkwanta South has been under curfew after renewed clashes between three ethnic groups leading to the loss of lives in October last year.
The conflict has affected businesses, education, properties and other activities of the people, leading the Interior Ministry to impose a curfew to bring the situation under control.
However, after critical consideration of the security situation in the area and feedback from the Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the Interior Ministry has announced a review of the curfew hours.
The curfew was to monitor and control the rising tension within the Municipality and to enable the security personnel to fish out the bad nuts behind the conflict during the celebration of the Yam festival as well as alleged land litigation.
Now, with the new curfew hours, residents will have an extra hour to go about their daily activities.
The minister emphasised that the safety and security of the residents are of utmost importance, and the extended curfew hours are aimed at ensuring their protection.
He also urged residents to cooperate with security forces and adhere to the new curfew regulations.
Asaase News in an interview with the municipal chief executive, Felix Owusu-Gyimah, commended the efforts of the residents by obeying the directives, adding that, upon consideration and studying the situation on the ground, there was the need to consider the review of the curfew hence the action taken.
He called on the residents to continue to live in peace and harmony with each other to attract investors and foster development.
“Where there is conflict, there is no development and growth, therefore it is important that we all embrace peace and unity and let the law settle our differences but not through violence leading to lost of lives”
“Nkwanta south has been one of the serene and fasting developing Municipality in the region but since the start of this conflict, development has gone down hence affecting our economic growth. I want to call on all residents of Nkwanta to let peace and unity rain among us” he added.
Some residents who spoke with Asaase News about the review of the curfew hours welcomed the decision and expressed their heartfelt thanks to the Interior Ministry adding that it will provide a sense of relief and security for the community.
Meanwhile, about 21 people have been arrested by the Nkwanta South police for disobeying the directives.
