Black Queens tumble in March FIFA rankings

Ghana retains its fourth position in Africa, trailing Morocco, South Africa, and arch-rivals Nigeria

Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, have slumped in the latest FIFA Women’s Rankings released on Friday (15 March).

The Queens dropped three spots from 61st to 64th in the global rankings, narrowly ahead of Zambia, who dashed their 2024 Paris Olympic qualification hopes with a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Despite the global decline, Ghana retains its fourth position in Africa, trailing Morocco (3rd), South Africa (2nd), and arch-rivals Nigeria (1st). This, however, marks the Black Queens’ lowest ranking since joining the FIFA rankings in July 2003 and signifies a concerning trend of consistent drops since June 2023.

The downward trajectory is particularly puzzling considering the Black Queens have won seven out of ten matches since the trend began in June 2023. Examining fixtures since the last rankings update in December 2023 reveals only two games: a 1-0 loss and a 3-3 draw against Zambia in the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers.

These results could potentially explain the dip in ranking points.

The Black Queens face the challenge of reversing this trend and climbing the FIFA rankings. Their performance in upcoming matches will be crucial in determining if they can turn the tide and secure a stronger position both globally and within Africa.
