CAF Confederation Cup: Dreams FC make history as they reach semi-finals

They will now face the winner of Zamalek and Modern Future in the semi-final, with the two Egyptian teams set to go at each other in Sunday's returnleg fixture in Cairo.

Dreams FC have earned a historic semi-final berth in the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup in their debut campaign, but not before an early scare from Stade Malien– drawing 1-1 at home in the second leg quarter-final tie to progress on a 3-2 aggregate.

The Ghanaian side went into the game on the back of a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Bamako, Mali,  but found themselves under some unexpected pressure after Yoro Mamadou Diaby shot the visitors into the lead on 59 minute at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi.

However, midfielder Sylvester Simba eased the nerves of the home team when he levelled on 70 minutes to keep their fairytale in the Africa inter-club competition on course.

It’s been a remarkable and brilliant run from Kazim Zito’s charges as they become the first Ghanaian side to reach the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in 20 years.

That year, Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak went all the way to the final in 2004.

Dreams FC are still unbeaten at home in Kumasi after drawing 1-1 against the Malian powerhouse.

They will now face the winner of Zamalek and Modern Future in the semi-final, with the two Egyptian teams set to go at each other in Sunday’s return leg fixture in Cairo.

The Dawu-based outfit reached the knockout phase after finishing top of Group B ahead of Nigeria’s Rivers United and Tunisian side Club Africain.
