Cameroonian President marks 41 year-rule

Today marks 41 years of Paul Biya as President of Cameroon. He assumed power in 1982 and is now 90 years of age.

Paul Biya previously held the role of prime minister and became the president of Cameroon in 1982.

Biya, now 90 years old, has ruled Cameroon for 41 years. He used his power to establish a unitary and more centralized state and removed the term limits from the constitution in 2008 to stay in power indefinitely.

Critics have argued a case of stable authoritarianism, and President Biya has remained in power amid the Anglophone crisis.

Since the independence of Cameroon in 1960, the Cameroonian Anglophones, who represent slightly over 20% of the total population, have felt that they do not have much influence in politics. They think that Francophone Cameroonians have taken over ruling under federalism.

In 2016, tensions broke in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. The crisis was sparked by demands to reform the educational and judicial systems. The authorities’ violent response to citizens’ concerns turned into an ongoing political crisis, which has since claimed over 6,000 lives and internally displaced 630,000 people.

President Paul Biya has been criticized for instigating the process when he reverted the official designation of the Republic of Cameroon to the original term under French administration in 1984.

Many members of the ruling Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (RDPC) strongly urge him to stand for an unprecedented eighth, seven-year term in the upcoming 2025 presidential election.
