CDD to government: Be deliberate in giving women leadership positions

Osae-Kwapong's comment is in reference to the ongoing district level elections across the 16 regions of Ghana

A democratic and development fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) Prof John Osae- Kwapong has called on duty bearers to be intentional in appointing women to leadership positions.

Osae-Kwapong’s comment is in reference to the ongoing district level elections across the 16 regions of Ghana.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (19 December), Osae-Kwapong said deepening women participation in development will enhance the process.

“One of the ways in which I think we can increase women participation in our political spaces, is to be intentional about it and use appointing authorities,” he said.

“So, if there are appointing authorities who have the power to place individual in certain positions, I believe that they would have to be intentional about it and use that appointing power to increase women participation in our political spaces.

“And hopefully, the more you increase that together with the public conversations and education, we would start moving away from some of these stereotype that discourage women from wanting to run for office even at the local level,” Osae-Kwapong added.
