Whether you’re out on the open water for fishing, sightseeing, or just cruising around, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself while on a boat ride

Boating is a popular recreational activity enjoyed by millions of people around the world.
Whether you’re out on the open water for fishing, sightseeing, or just cruising around, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself while on a boat ride.

Here are seven ways to stay safe and enjoy your time on the water:

  1. Wear a life jacket: One of the most important safety precautions you can take while on a boat ride is to wear a properly fitting life jacket. In the event of an accident or emergency, a life jacket can save your life by keeping you afloat until help arrives.
  2. Stay alert and aware: Always be mindful of your surroundings while on a boat ride. Keep an eye out for other boats, swimmers, and obstacles in the water. Pay attention to weather conditions and be prepared to take action if a storm approaches
  3. Follow boating rules and regulations: Familiarise yourself with the boating laws and regulations in your area before heading out on the water. Obey speed limits, navigation rules, and any other guidelines set forth by local authorities.
  4. Avoid alcohol and drugs: Just like when driving a car, it’s important to avoid alcohol and drugs while operating a boat. Impaired boating can lead to accidents, injuries, and even fatalities.
  5. Be prepared for emergencies: Make sure your boat is equipped with essential safety gear, such as a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and emergency flares. Know how to use these items in case of an emergency.
  6. Stay hydrated and protected from the sun: It’s easy to get dehydrated while out on the water, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout your boat ride. Additionally, protect yourself from the sun by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
  7. Tell someone your plans: Before heading out on a boat ride, let someone know your planned route, destination, and estimated return time. This way, if you run into trouble, someone will know where to look for you.By following these seven tips, you can protect yourself and others while enjoying a safe and fun boat ride. Remember to always prioritise safety and be prepared for any situation that may arise while out on the water.
