Chereponi violence: Two killed and five others injured

Houses and structures were set on fire, forcing occupants to leave for safety, locals who were close to the scene said

At least two people were killed as a result of communal violence at Wenchike in Chereponi of the North East Region, local officials have confirmed.

Five others were hurt, including a military officer.

The violence is alleged to have expanded to six more regional districts since it began on Thursday (23 February), multiple media sources said.

Houses and structures were set on fire, forcing occupants to leave for safety, locals who were close to the scene said.

It is unclear what may have caused the disturbances, but reports suggest it is linked to a decades-long chieftaincy dispute.

The clashes reportedly started after the paramount chief for Chereponi attempted to enskin a chief for a community in the Wenchike area, but the chief of the area Naa Abuba, early Thursday morning enskinned a different person for the same community.

This sparked tension in the area resulting in gunshots, according to The Ghana Report.

Police officers have been deployed to the community to restore law and order.
