Clinical nutritionist to Ghanaians: It is quite risky to be obese

A clinical nutritionist at the Prince Emmanuel Clinic, Dr Benjamin Nuako has advised Ghanaians to eat right to avoid the risks associated with obesity.

The 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey report has revealed that the number of women who are overweight is more than twice that of men.

The report specifies that 50.2% of women aged 15 to 49 are either overweight or obese, with 20.7% of men within that age bracket also either overweight or obese.

According to GSS, about 22% of women are obese with 28% being overweight.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (4 April), Nuako said the risks associated with obesity are very high hence the need to avoid being obese.

“It is a big problem that needs to be addressed and I pray that parents will listen and the notion that they are doing their kids good is wrong. So It is very very expensive to be obese in terms of the risk factors associated with it.”

Also speaking on the same programme, Dr Maame Yaa Nyarko, paediatric specialist at the Princess Marie Louise Hospital proposed for the provision of nutritious meals under the School Feeding Programme to help reduce incident of obesity especially in children.

“Our school feeding programme can target providing nutritious meals to the children, “she said.
