Chairman Wontumi, born Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics.

Here are seven facts you probably didn’t know about the controversial political figure shaping Ghana’s politics:

Early life and business ventures

Chairman Wontumi was born on 1 May 1976 in Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Before entering politics, he made a name for himself as a successful businessman, particularly in the mining and real estate sectors. He once confessed that he came from a very poor background with a modest upbringing.

Speaking about the source of his wealth during an interview with media personality, Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman for the Ashanti Region revealed that he started building his wealth at a young age, adding that he owns “about 100” houses in Kumasi alone.

He also added that he built his first 25-bedroom house when he was just 22 years old.

Entry into politics

Chairman Wontumi’s membership in the NPP quickly propelled him to prominence and he soon became a key figure within the party. His entrepreneurial skills and financial success have played a significant role in his political journey. His ability to mobilise resources and connect with voters made him a valuable asset during election campaigns.

Controversial statements and public image

Chairman Wontumi is known for his outspoken nature and controversial statements. He never shies away from making bold claims or engaging in verbal sparring with political opponents.

Studied theology

And to those who weren’t aware, Chairman Wontumi is a security expert who studied in London and later studied theology in the USA. Chairman Wontumi’s younger brother, however, is a Catholic priest, and to him, that’s enough reason why he can’t be a priest too and he has chosen to marry to fulfil God’s procreation proclamation.

He has a wife, a number of children and just one girlfriend, he said on Accra-based UTV.

Once made a bid to buy Chelsea

Chairman Wontumi in 2022 said he was ready to take over the London-based club who were in the market for a new owner. According to him, he submitted a bid to the European champions.

According to a letter published in the media, Chairman Wontumi made a bid of US$3.1 billion for the English club which was valued at £3 billion by the then-owner Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea was put on the market in the wake of controversies surrounding Russian owner Abramovich following his country’s recent invasion of Ukraine.

When asked on Accra-based TV3 if his proposed bid is a joke, Wontumi was adamant about the seriousness of his interest in the London club.

“Do you see me as a joke person? So is money supposed to be given, owned by angels or ghosts? At the moment, we are bidding so I don’t want to talk a lot. My lawyers and my financiers are going. So once they finish everything, there will be more details. And I’m not the only person [bidding] so I don’t want to talk too much…”

Love him or hate him, Chairman Wontumi’s impact in Ghana is undeniable and his legacy will continue to shape the country’s politics for years to come.
