Eastern Region: Chieftaincy crisis looms at Begoro

It is alleged that the Okyenhene prefers a different candidate as chief of Begoro but the Asona royal family disagrees

A chieftaincy crisis looms at Begoro in the Eastern Region as the Asona royal family disagrees with the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, over who becomes the chief of Begoro.

It is alleged that the Okyenhene prefers a different candidate as chief of Begoro.

The Asona royal family has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Inspector General of Police to intervene. It said that to avoid any conflict, the Okyenhene should not impose his preferred chief on the people of Begoro.

Speaking at a press conference in Begoro on Monday (27 February), the spokesperson for the Asona royal family, Opanin Kwaku Amankwa, warned that any decision taken before the date of hearing by the national house of chiefs on the matter will be against the Chieftaincy Act and will be resisted.

ā€œWe the royal family of Begoro wish to bring to the attention of Nana Akufo-Addo, the Inspector General of Police and the whole country that if immediate action is not taken for good sense to reign supreme in this matter, what has been happening in Bawku all these years could probably be replicated in Begoro, which has over the years been known for its peace and tranquility,” Amankwa said.

Members of the royal family, clad inĀ red and black and chanting war songs said the judicial committee of the Eastern Regional house of chiefs has ruled in favour of the Asona royal family with respect to the candidate who is next in line of succession.

They cautioned that the Okyenhene respects the customs of the people of Begoro.

Begoro is in the Benkum division of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area. It has been faced with chieftaincy issues since the death of Daasebre Awuah Kotoko II 3 years ago.
