The families of three robbery suspects linked to a recent incident resulting in the tragic death of a police officer in Ejura, Ashanti Region, have strongly rejected the allegations against the alleged culprits.
They firmly assert that the suspects, currently held in detention by a court, are law-abiding citizens and not involved in any criminal activities.
They particularly highlighted one of the accused, Alhaji Wahab, known for assisting the police.
The police, in a press statement, had earlier explained that the suspects were involved in a shootout with their men during an attempted mobile money robbery on 9 October, resulting in the unfortunate death of Sergeant Ahmed Kamal.
The family is, however, challenging the police’s account describing the press statement as a total fabrication.
“These two are men of integrity and are not armed robbers,” the assembly member for Sarki Kura Electoral Area in the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality, Adam Alhassan told the press.
“Alhaji in particular is an informant of the police in the municipality. The police also said that two suspects were arrested with one on the run, which is a total fabrication of facts.

They also want the IGP to investigate the activities of the Police Investigative Department indicating their operations destabilize the peace in various communities.
“The three suspects reported to the Ejura police voluntarily and were told to go to the Mampong police for their statements to be taken, and they were subsequently detained and later charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder, and not robbery as was alleged in the police statement.
“We the family want to use this medium to tell the IGP to monitor and review the operations of the Police Investigative Department since their operations are causing a lot of problems in the police service because any Ghanaian that will meet them will mistake them for armed robbers and we urge the government to free our brothers”.
MUSEC on high alert
Meanwhile, the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has met over the matter. The meeting chaired by the Municipal Chief Executive Dr Kingsley Osei on Tuesday (17 October 2023) resolved to ensure that cool heads prevail.
“They will write a report to the Ashanti Regional Security Council for further action”, a source familiar with the development told Asaase News.
“For now, security is on a high alert to prevent any eventuality. The MUSEC is working hard in that regard”, the source said.
The suspects are to reappear before a court in Mampong on 26 October 2023.
