Kathleen Addy, a deputy chairperson of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has expressed worry about “foreign cultural infiltration” in Ghana.
The commission is attributing the recent development to the display of foreign culture in local movies and other contents in the Ghanaian media landscape.
The deputy chairperson of the NCCE is particularly worried about the display of some aspects of Nigerian culture at local marriages and parties recently.
“You see aspects of Nigerian culture in marriage ceremonies and parties. This thing about throwing of cash, for instance, it never used to be a Ghanaian culture,” Addy said on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (21 February).
“Now there are cash guns, so instead of using your hands to spray, you pack them [money] into a thing then you press it and then it falls all over the place.
“It never used to be our thing. We totally underestimate the power of the media and how it is so insidious, infiltrating and shaping culture and shaping minds,” Addy told the host Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.
The deputy NCCE chairperson wants the National Media Commission (NMC) to crack the whip to bring some sanity in the media.
“We underestimate the power of the media and its insidious ability to subtly change and influence culture. For the NCCE, the things we see on TV, we can only comment on but we urge the NMC and the government to help deal with the issue of rigorously reviewing content in our media.
“The NCCE is not mandated to deal with the matter of dodgy religious people on television; that is for the NMC,” she said.
