Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa ends singathon on a record 126 hours

The broadcast journalist and mother-of-three has been performing hundreds of Ghanaian songs back-to-back at the Akwaaba Village in Accra since midnight on Sunday (24 December)

The Ghanaian broadcast journalist Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has exceeded the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual, completing her attempt to overturn the record on Friday (29 December) by singing for an unmatched 126 hours and 52 minutes.

The broadcast journalist and mother-of-three had been performing hundreds of Ghanaian songs back to back at the Akwaaba Village in Accra since midnight on Sunday (24 December).

“This was a mere dream that was visualised in just a period of five days,” a visibly worn-out but elated Aduonum told the crowd after her attempt.

“It has been a smooth journey. I hope it will be an inspiration to women out there.

“There is a lot out there and if you put your mind to it you’ll achieve it,” the young mother-of-three added.

After expert review by Guinness World Records, Aduonum will be hoping to beat the current record-holder, Sunil Waghmare of India, who sang continuously for an impressive 105 hours between 3 and 7 March 2012. Sunil Waghmare’s record stood at 102 hours.

“Your passion and talent shine brightly, and I’m confident you’ll definitely make history,” said Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, encouraging Aduonum.

“Keep singing your heart out! We are with you.”

Aduonum gave Ghanaians a pleasant Christmas gift as the Akwaaba Village became a concert venu for people from all walks of life, including politicians, celebrities in the arts and the entertainment industry and members of the security services.

Fans and dignitaries from all backgrounds continue to commend her resilience and exceptional resolve as Ghanaians take to social media to applaud her attempt.

The attempt attracted high-profile celebrities such as the president of Bhim Nation, Stonebwoy, KiDi, Kuami Eugene, Kwabena Kwabena, Sarkodie and controversial dancehall artist Shatta Wale.

The gospel trio Daughters of Glorious Jesus and the Rufftown Records artist Wendy Shay also graced the occasion.

The actor Clemento Suarez, the MP Sam George, the media personalities Bola Ray, Naa Ashorkor and Berla Mundi as well as a host of others passed through to cheer on Afua Aduonum.
