Sing-a-thon: You’ll make history, Bawumia tells Asantewaa

Ghanaian lady Afua Asantewaa Aduonum on Sunday (24 December) began an attempt to break the longest singing marathon, which is recognised by the Guinness World Records

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is optimistic that Afua Asantewaa Aduonum will make history as the Ghanaian attempts to break the Guinness World Records for the longest individual singing marathon.

The broadcast journalist has set four days and nine hours beginning 24 December to beat the current record-holder, Indian Sunil Waghmare, who sang for an impressive 105 hours from March 3 to March 7 2012. Sunil Waghmare’s record stands at 102 hours.

Aduonum’s attempt is expected to end on 27 December 2023.

“Wishing Afua Asantewaa O Aduonum all the best as she takes on the challenge of breaking the singathon record set by Indian singer Sunil Waghmare,” Bawumia wrote on Facebook as the sing-a-thon entered its second day.

“Your passion and talent shine brightly, and I’m confident you’ll definitely make history. Keep singing your heart out! We are with you,” Bawumia added.

Aduonum, mother of three, opened the marathon with the iconic Osibisa track ‘Woyaya’ and continued with a medley of seasonal Ghanaian gospel hits from artists such as Tagoe Sisters, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Yaw Sarpong and Esther Smith.

Switching from the gospel scene, Afua Asantewaa transitions to secular tunes by the likes of Shatta Wale, Ebony Reigns, Wendy Shay, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Adina, Samini, Sarkodie, Black Sherif among others.

The event is taking place at the Akwaaba Village in Accra.
